Messi did not leave football after the World Cup. He went back to Inter Miami and kept rewriting history. By August 2026 he had added 14 goals and 8 assists in the new MLS season, and on August 20 he scored his 922nd career goal — 1,166 games, 420 assists, 46 trophies.
Off the pitch, Miami became home in every sense. The club opened Miami Freedom Park in April 2026, and Messi signed an extension through 2028 that made him the highest-paid player in MLS history with a $25 million base salary.
