From Charlton's Academy to Champion of Africa
The Lookman story is a story of reinvention. A Charlton Athletic academy graduate, signed by Everton at 19, loaned to RB Leipzig twice - where German football first saw what he could become - then Fulham and a stop at Leicester. The move that changed everything was Atalanta in 2022. In Bergamo he stopped being a winger with promise and became one of Europe's most decisive forwards, and in May 2024 he wrote himself into continental history: a hat-trick in the Europa League final as Atalanta demolished Bayer Leverkusen 3-0, the club's first major European trophy.

Nigeria 2026-27 home - Lookman 7, the Super Eagles' talisman
By the end of 2024 the game had caught up with the story: CAF Men's Player of the Year, the first Nigerian to lift the award since Victor Osimhen. The London-born wide forward had become the face of the Super Eagles' number 7 - and the most coveted African attacker in Europe's top five leagues.
The January Switch: Lookman Takes Madrid
In January 2026, Atalanta's crown jewel crossed into La Liga. Atletico Madrid paid serious money for a 28-year-old at his peak, and Diego Simeone's machine gave him exactly what he wanted: a team built around transitions, duels and cold-blooded finishing. His first half-season in red and white stripes delivered nine goals and four assists in 24 appearances - including strikes in La Liga, the Copa del Rey and the Champions League as Atleti reached the semi-finals.

The away edition - Lookman 7 for the travelling fans
For 2026-27, Atleti handed him a bigger badge of status. When Thiago Almada left for River Plate, the number 11 shirt - the same number Lookman wore throughout his Atalanta years - became his again. The club confirmed the switch in August 2026, and he began his first full season at the Metropolitano with it on his back.
The Super Eagles' Number 7
For Nigeria, the number 7 is not a squad slot - it is a statement. Lookman has worn it through more than 40 senior caps and a goal tally closing in on a dozen, including the knockout-round doubles and strikes that carried the Super Eagles to the 2023 AFCON final. The green home shirt with Lookman 7 is one of the best-selling national team jerseys in Africa - and with the Atlético move, demand has spread far beyond it.
