Atlético Madrid 2026-27 Hub: Simeone's 15th Year, the Neptuno Kit & a New-look Squad
- Simeone's 15th year. Diego Simeone begins a 15th season in the Atlético Madrid dugout — the longest-serving manager in the club's history — under contract to June 2027.
- The Neptuno kit. The Nike 2026-27 home shirt keeps the red-and-white stripes but adds a faint trident watermark honouring the Neptuno fountain, the Rojiblancos' celebration shrine.
- A rebuilt squad. Antoine Griezmann left on a free for MLS, but Atlético signed Hjulmand, Lee Kang-in (No.7), Grimaldo and Hancko, with Koke staying on as captain for one more year.
- Heartbreak and pride. 2025-26 ended trophyless but memorable: a Copa del Rey final defeat on penalties and a Champions League semi-final loss to Arsenal, having knocked out Barcelona and Tottenham.
Simeone's 15th Year & the 2025-26 Recap
No active manager is more synonymous with one club than Diego Simeone is with Atlético Madrid. The Argentine begins his 15th consecutive season at the Metropolitano in 2026-27, his contract running to June 2027. The 2025-26 campaign was, in classic Cholo fashion, both heartbreaking and defiant. Atlético finished 4th in La Liga — Simeone's lowest full-season points total — yet were the only Spanish side to reach a European semi-final. In the Champions League they knocked out Tottenham and Barcelona before falling 2-1 on aggregate to Arsenal in the last four. A Copa del Rey final against Real Sociedad ended in a 3-4 penalty defeat. After the semi-final exit, Simeone turned to the fans and applauded; the fans sang back. That mutual pact, more than any trophy, defines the era.
The Neptuno Kit and the Nike Deal
Atlético's 2026-27 Nike home shirt is a study in understated symbolism. The red-and-white vertical stripes remain — as they have since 1911 — but a faint trident watermark runs through the fabric, honouring the Fuente de Neptuno, the Madrid fountain where Rojiblancos fans gather to celebrate titles. A navy V-neck, the Riyadh Air chest sponsor and Kraken sleeve mark complete the look, with Aero-Fit technology on the authentic version. The away shirt, released on 18 May 2026, was the first launched in Europe this season: a black base with neon-green accents. Nike has dressed Atlético since 2001, and the Metropolitano itself is set to be a host venue for the 2030 World Cup, with Madrid's Bernabéu and Metropolitano both in the bid.
A Rebuilt Squad: Griezmann Out, Lee Kang-in In
The biggest story of Atlético's summer is the end of an era: Antoine Griezmann's contract expired and he left for Orlando City in MLS, closing a decorated chapter. But Simeone and sporting director Andrea Berta moved quickly. Defensive midfielder Morten Hjulmand arrived from Sporting for €40m, South Korea's Lee Kang-in joined from PSG for around €35m and inherits the No.7, left-back Alejandro Grimaldo came from Bayer Leverkusen, and centre-back David Hancko from Feyenoord. Captain Koke — the club's all-time appearance leader with 740 games and 8 trophies — signed a one-year extension to June 2027, turning down MLS. With Jan Oblak in goal, Julián Álvarez leading the line and Ademola Lookman adding pace, the new-look Rojiblancos opened the season with a 2-0 win over Málaga.
