The Draw That Split the Giants

The 2026-27 Champions League league phase draw took place in Monaco on August 27, with Henry and Villa drawing the balls. The headline: Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester City and Barcelona - the holders, the 2023 treble winners and La Liga's new super-team - were thrown together in the same schedule. Man City drew the most brutal hand of any pot-one club: PSG at home, Barcelona away, plus Porto, Napoli and Leipzig. Barcelona get Man City at home and a trip to PSG - the two biggest club nights of their season in one league phase.

Defending champions PSG are chasing a historic three-peat after winning the last two editions. Real Madrid, the 15-time kings, face Inter at home and Arsenal away in their headline ties. Arsenal, runners-up last season, host Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund and travel to Bayern. Liverpool face Atletico Madrid at home and Inter away. And four first-timers - Viking, Sabah, LASK and Como - will play European football's biggest stage for the very first time.

How the New Format Works

This is the third season of the league phase format, and the rules are simple: 36 teams, one table, eight matches each - four at home, four away. Each club faces two opponents drawn from each of the four coefficient pots. Clubs from the same country cannot meet in the league phase, and a team can face at most two clubs from any other country.

PositionWhat happens
1-8Qualify directly for the Round of 16
9-24Two-legged play-off ties for the remaining 8 Round of 16 spots
25-36Eliminated, no Europa League parachute

League phase runs September 8 to January 27; knockouts run February to June 5, when the final is played at Madrid's Metropolitano.
