Der Klassiker 2026/27: Bayern Munich vs Borussia Dortmund
Bundesliga Matchday 8 · Saturday 31 October 2026, 18:30 CET · Allianz Arena, Munich
There are derbies, and then there is Der Klassiker — the fixture that splits Germany down the middle. And this edition carries an unusual twist: for the first time in a long while, it is second-placed Bayern hosting top-of-the-table Dortmund. After Matchday 4, Kovač’s side sit first with a perfect 12-point return, two clear of the champions.
Nobody predicted this start. Dortmund, runners-up last season, have taken maximum points while conceding just twice. Bayern, meanwhile, have been ruthless in attack — 14 goals in four games — but were held 0-0 by newly promoted Schalke on Matchday 2.

Standings after Matchday 4, checked against worldfootball.net on 23 September 2026. Both sides play three more league games before the Klassiker — Bayern host RB Leipzig and visit Augsburg and Freiburg, while Dortmund face Werder Bremen, Union Berlin and Eintracht Frankfurt — so we’ll refresh this table closer to kick-off.
History favours the home side heavily. Across all competitions, Bayern lead the head-to-head with roughly 70 wins to Dortmund’s 33 (37 drawn). More pointedly, Dortmund have not beaten Bayern in their last five meetings, a run that includes last February’s 3-2 league defeat and August’s 2-1 Franz Beckenbauer Supercup loss, when BVB played over an hour with ten men.
| Date | Fixture | Result | Competition |
|---|---|---|---|
| 22 Aug 2026 | Dortmund vs Bayern | 1-2 | Supercup |
| 28 Feb 2026 | Bayern vs Dortmund | 3-2 | Bundesliga |
| 2025/26 season | Bayern champions | Dortmund 2nd | Bundesliga |
But the form table tells a different story in 2026/27. Dortmund’s defensive record — two goals conceded in four league games, with Gregor Kobel unbeaten behind Waldemar Anton and new signing Joane Gadou — is the best in the division. Bayern’s 7-0 demolition of Union Berlin on Matchday 4 was the loudest statement any German side has made this season.
Vincent Kompany (Bayern, head coach since July 2024) defended the 2025/26 title with 89 points and 122 goals, then added the DFB-Pokal for a domestic double and opened this season by lifting the Supercup against Dortmund itself.
Niko Kovač (Dortmund, head coach since January 2025, contracted until June 2027) has rebuilt BVB around discipline and defensive structure. His contract extension and sporting director Lars Ricken’s public backing underline how completely he has turned the club around — from eleventh in the winter of 2024/25 to German runners-up and now early league leaders.
Bayern: Harry Kane remains the reference point up front, fed by Michael Olise, Luis Díaz and a fit-again Jamal Musiala, with Joshua Kimmich dictating from deep. Konrad Laimer is sidelined with a muscle injury and will miss several weeks.
Dortmund: Serhou Guirassy and Felix Nmecha have two league goals each, while summer arrival Konstantinos Karetsas made an instant impact after his move from Genk. Long-term absentees Emre Can and Giannis Konstantelias (both ACL) will play no part, which stretches Kovač’s midfield depth.
