The Second Year of the New Format
The UEFA Champions League returned to its league phase last season for the first time since 2002-03, and the format's sophomore edition kicks off this week with thirty-six teams, eight matchdays, and the kind of fixture density that makes Tuesday-through-Thursday feel like an international tournament compressed into ninety-six hours. Matchday 1 runs across three evenings — Tuesday 9/8, Wednesday 9/9, and Thursday 9/10 — and delivers eighteen matches in total. Six of them carry enough plot weight to count as the storylines of the round. The other twelve are the supporting cast, and at least two of those twelve will become stories of their own by the weekend.
Real Madrid host Inter at the newly renovated Santiago Bernabéu on Tuesday night to open the league phase, and almost everything about that fixture is built for a curtain-raiser: the historical weight of the fixture itself (nineteen European meetings, the first being the 1964 European Cup final Inter won 3-1), the Jose Mourinho homecoming subplot (the manager who took Inter to the treble in 2010 now standing opposite a side he understands better than most), and the Cristian Chivu angle — Chivu was one of Mourinho's defenders in that treble, and Tuesday will be his first Champions League night as Inter's head coach against the club where his mentor once reigned.
The Headline Numbers
36 teams, 144 matches, 8 matchdays. Top eight in the table go straight to the round of 16. Ninth through twenty-fourth play the knockout phase play-offs. Twenty5th through thirty-sixth are out. The final is on Saturday 6 June 2027 at the Estadio Metropolitano in Madrid — the first Champions League final hosted by the Spanish capital since 2019. The entire season's worth of football, in other words, is one continental table away from final-table drama.
The Six Storylines That Matter
Tue 9/8 · 21:00 CEST (15:00 ET · 03:00+1 Beijing)
Real Madrid vs Inter — The Bernabéu Opener
The Champions League fixture list gave the league phase its strongest possible starting image, and the storyline is doing the rest of the work. Mourinho against Inter is a story that doesn't need embellishment: he won the treble there with Chivu, Maicon, Sneijder and Milito in 2009-10, was sacked by Chelsea and Manchester United afterwards, came back to the Bernabéu to manage Real Madrid for a second spell in 2025, and now faces the side he made European champions with the first Champions League night of his second Madrid tenure. Chivu, his former centre-back, is the manager standing opposite him.
Madrid's midfield is depleted. Arda Güler, Eduardo Camavinga and Bernardo Silva are all out with carried-over UEFA disciplinary suspensions from last season. Federico Valverde and Jude Bellingham will carry the central load, and Aurélien Tchouaméni is the only natural deep-lying option behind them if the game match demands a third body. Inter, with Hakan Çalhanoğlu and Nicolò Barella already in form after three straight Serie A wins, will try to make Madrid feel that absence from minute one.
Predicted lineup (4-2-3-1): Courtois; Alexander-Arnold, Rüdiger, Huijsen, Mendy; Valverde, Tchouaméni; Brahím Díaz, Bellingham, Vinícius; Mbappé
Inter (3-5-2): Josep Martínez; Pavard, Akanji, Bastoni; Henrique, Sučić, Çalhanoğlu, Barella, Dimarco; Esposito, Lautaro
Tue 9/8 · 21:00 CEST · Estádio do Dragão
Porto vs Man City — Haaland's Champions League Reset
Erling Haaland has scored more Champions League goals before his twenty-sixth birthday than any player in the competition's history, and yet the question of how he performs in a Manchester City shirt on these nights still lingers. The reason is simple: his Borussia Dortmund numbers in the competition were so absurd (twenty goals in seventeen games before his Premier League move) that City's first two campaigns have felt slightly muted by comparison. He opens this season's league phase in Portugal against a Porto side that won't sit back. Estádio do Dragão at night, with Pep Guardiola's possession machine visiting, has been one of the trickier away ties in the competition for the last decade.
Porto's manager has talked openly in pre-season about using this fixture as a statement game against the Premier League's reigning champions. The result rarely goes the home side's way on these nights, but the performance almost always matters for the league-phase table. Guardiola, without Rodri for the first month and with Phil Foden still working back to full fitness, will need Haaland at his sharpest.
Call it 0-2 City — Haaland scores, Foden adds a late second, and Estádio do Dragão applauds a Champions League performance rather than a Champions League result.
Wed 9/9 · 21:00 CEST (20:00 BST · 03:00+1 Beijing) · Anfield
Liverpool vs Atletico Madrid — Iraola's Anfield Test, Isak's Big-Night Arrival
Andoni Iraola takes Liverpool into the Champions League proper for the first time as a Premier League manager, and his first European night at Anfield comes against the side that turned the venue into a fortress of attrition during the Diego Simeone years. Simeone is still there. Liverpool's recent record against Simeone's Atletico has been a mixed bag — three wins, two draws, two defeats across the last seven meetings — but the venue has not seen Atletico win in the competition since 2020.
The storyline on the pitch is Alexander Isak. Liverpool's record signing has three goals in his first three Premier League appearances under Iraola and the kind of movement that should concern an Atletico defence missing its defensive anchor (José Giménez is out). Simeone's side is also without Julián Álvarez, which weakens their counter-punch. Florian Wirtz's creativity, plus Cody Gakpo's wide rotation, gives Liverpool enough variety in the final third that one clean cross into the box should be enough.
Prediction: 2-1 Liverpool — Isak opens his Champions League account for the club, Gakpo adds a second, and Ademola Lookman pulls one back for Atletico in the second half. Jan Oblak's best performance of the season is not enough.
Wed 9/9 · 21:00 CEST · Stadio Diego Armando Maradona
Napoli vs Arsenal — The Italian Champions Test the Premier League Pretender
Napoli carry the weight of being the reigning Scudetto holders into their first Champions League night at the Maradona under Massimiliano Allegri. Kevin De Bruyne, Rasmus Højlund and the new wing-back system are built for European nights; their win at Liverpool in pre-season and their handling of Manchester City in last season's league phase set the template. Arsenal arrive as one of the Premier League's most coherent sides but with question marks still attached to whether Mikel Arteta's team can sustain its domestic level into two matches a week.
The subplot is Bukayo Saka against the Napoli right-side. If Giovanni Di Lorenzo can be turned, Saka's one-on-one quality becomes Arsenal's cleanest route to goal; if he can't, this becomes a game of fine margins. De Bruyne's set pieces are Napoli's reliable Plan B. Expect tactical discipline from both managers and a moment of individual quality to settle it.
Prediction: 1-1 — Saka puts Arsenal ahead early in the second half; De Bruyne curls a free kick into the top corner with fifteen minutes left; Allegri and Arteta both pretend they wanted the draw.
Wed 9/9 · 21:00 CEST · Estadi Olimpic Lluís Companys
Barcelona vs Feyenoord — Flick's First European Night at Home
Hansi Flick's Barcelona have been the most-watched rebuild of the season, with Lamine Yamal and a refreshed forward line now carrying the weight of a club whose last Champions League semi-final was the dramatic 5-3 against Inter last term. Feyenoord arrive from the Eredivisie having beaten Fenerbahçe and Bayer Leverkusen on the way to the league phase, and they will not sit back at the Estadi Olimpic. Robin van Persie's side plays the kind of high-press, full-back-inverting football that has given Barça trouble at home for the last four seasons.
The storyline is Yamal. At eighteen, he is already the difference between Barcelona scoring three and scoring one at this level. If he gets the ball in the right channels against Feyenoord's high line, the home side will be out of sight by half-time. If Feyenoord's press forces Pedri into mistakes, the match becomes a coin-flip. Lewandowski, returning to fitness, is the Plan A and the Plan B.
Prediction: 3-0 Barcelona — Yamal scores twice, Lewandowski adds a third before the hour mark, and Flick's side start the league phase the way their last Champions League semi-final ended.
Thu 9/10 · 21:00 CEST · Old Trafford
Manchester United vs Sabah FK — Debutants in the Theatre
The final night of Matchday 1 is also the most lopsided on paper: Manchester United host Sabah FK from Azerbaijan, who are making their Champions League debut after winning the 2025-26 Premyer Liqa and coming through two qualifying rounds. The gap in squad value is roughly three hundred to one. The storyline, though, is genuinely about Sabah: a club founded in 1993, in their first Champions League group-stage / league-phase match, walking out at Old Trafford on a Thursday night in front of seventy-five thousand people.
United's angle is the new signings. Mason Mount, Rasmus Højlund, and the summer's headline arrival Bryan Mbeumo all need European nights to sharpen their understanding with each other. The result almost certainly goes one way. The performance is the variable — how sharp United look, whether the new-look attack has gelled enough to make this the start of a domestic-and-European double push.
Prediction: 3-0 Manchester United — Mount scores his first Champions League goal in three years, Højlund adds two, and Sabah's first away night in the competition ends with the kind of result that tells them exactly where European football's ceiling is right now.

The Four Clubs Playing Champions League Football for the First Time
Four clubs are making their Champions League debut this season. Sabah FK from Azerbaijan are the most visible because they drew Manchester United at Old Trafford on the final night of Matchday 1, but the other three have equally compelling stories. Viking FK from Stavanger, Norway, qualified through a stunning Rosenborg upset in the Eliteserien playoff and the second qualifying round. LASK from Linz, Austria, are back in the competition after a six-year absence and bring the same pressing-heavy, full-back-rotating system that unsettled Club Brugge, PSV and Sporting CP on their last European run. Como 1907 from Italy are the romantic story: a side promoted from Serie B only last season, owned by the Indonesian Hartono brothers, managed by Cesc Fabregas, and now facing RB Leipzig on Matchday 1 at the Sinigaglia with a squad that includes Raphael Varane in the twilight of his career and a group of young Italian talent Fabregas has been quietly assembling for two years.
None of the four debutants are expected to qualify for the knockouts. All four are worth watching in the league phase, and at least one of them will take a point off a side that finishes in the top eight.
Tactical Microscope: Three Battles to Watch
Madrid's midfield without Camavinga, Güler, and Silva. Three suspensions for the opener mean Valverde and Bellingham have to share the central pivot responsibility in a 4-2-3-1 shape. Tchouaméni is the natural third body but is recovering from a muscle problem; if he starts, his mobility will be the question. Inter's press will target Bellingham's deeper position, which he hasn't played regularly since his Borussia Dortmund days. If Madrid cannot find a way to break Inter's first line of pressure, the night will look very different from the script.
Liverpool's press vs Simeone's block without Álvarez and Giménez. Iraola's Liverpool has averaged above 2.0 xG in every Premier League match so far this season, but their opponents have scored against them in three of five league games. Atletico without their striker (knee) and their central defensive leader (out) are not the Atletico of 2016, but they are still built on shape and counter-attack. Look for Liverpool's first line to push high into the Atletico third; look for the gaps behind Tsimikas and Frimpong on the break.
Man City's possession vs Porto's home press. Estádio do Dragão has been one of the harder away venues in the Champions League for years, and Porto's pressing traps in the wide channels have beaten better sides than this Manchester City team on first visits. Rodri's absence means City's build-up has to go through Kovacic or Nunes; both are capable, neither is Rodri. If Porto force City into a longer ball game, the match becomes more open than Guardiola's team typically prefers.
