Heroes, Dark Horses & the Jerseys the World Is Buying — 2026-27 Season, First Edition
Every season opens as a blank page — and then the transfer window slams shut and the first chapters write themselves. Two rounds into the 2026-27 campaign, Europe's Big Five are telling five very different stories: a machine in Manchester, a fairytale in Hull, a sleeping giant in Paris, and a king returning to Madrid in pink. Here is our first report card of the season, league by league — plus the jerseys the world is already buying.
The short version: Barcelona and Inter look like the teams to beat. Man City and Chelsea are box office. Hull City, Betis, Lazio, Elversberg and Paris FC are the early dark horses. PSG and Spurs are the season's first crisis clubs. And Liverpool's retro shirt is selling faster than anyone's.
Premier League: Three Perfect Starts, One Fairytale
Manchester City are the machine. Two wins, six goals, zero drama. Haaland finally broke his early-season hoodoo with a brace at Crystal Palace, new signing Rayan Cherki already has four goal involvements in two games, and Maresca's system purrs like it has never been away.
Chelsea are the fireworks. Seven goals in two games, a record 31-second opener from João Pedro, a debut goal for British-record signing Morgan Rogers (£117m) and Cole Palmer pulling the strings — Xabi Alonso's first weeks have been a carnival.
Liverpool are the giant still waking up. The £125m man, Alexander Isak, is back among the goals after his nightmare year — but two draws and a 13-touch afternoon at Forest tell the real story: Iraola's rebuild needs a spark.
And then there is Hull City. The promoted side the models gave a 38.7% relegation chance have beaten Manchester United 2-0 and won twice — a top-three start nobody predicted. Tottenham, meanwhile, are bottom with zero goals. Yes, really.

Barcelona look untouchable. Seven goals in two games, none conceded. Raphinha and Fermín are joint-top scorers, and Ballon d'Or winner Rodri made his debut to a standing ovation at Camp Nou. Flick's side are chasing a third straight title — and playing like it's already theirs.
Real Madrid are reborn. José Mourinho is back — 13 years after he left, 8/18 unveiled, three-year deal — and with him came teenage record signing Diomandé (€125m, the most expensive African player ever) and Mbappé already on three goals. The pink third shirt has split the internet; the team, so far, looks united.
The real story, though, is the company: Sevilla and Real Betis both sit on six points, Betis without conceding a goal. La Liga's ceiling isn't just white and blaugrana this season.

Serie A: Four Perfect Starts, Zero Drama
Inter are doing what champions do — winning ugly. A 4-1 statement on Matchday 1, then a 1-0 grind at Cagliari with a Calhanoglu thunderbolt. Chivu's side are unbeaten, unbothered and favourites to retain the Scudetto.
AC Milan (2-0 vs Venezia under Amorim) and Juventus (two wins, zero conceded) are perfect too. The quietest surprise? Lazio — two 1-0 wins, new signing Frattesi decisive in both. Style points: zero. Table points: six. Meanwhile Fiorentina are bottom with 0-7, the season's early collapse.

Bundesliga: One Round, One Statement
Germany started late (8/28) — so the Bundesliga has played only one round, and we're keeping this card provisional. But what a round.
Bayern are the lion, awake early: 5-1 over Stuttgart in the opener, Kimmich pulling strings, Kane's shadow already looming over the Golden Boot race. And the fairy-tale belongs to Elversberg — a promoted side winning their first-ever Bundesliga game 3-2, against Leverkusen. Matchday 2 (4-6 September) can't come soon enough.

Ligue 1: The Giant Is Asleep
Monaco are the new standard: the only perfect side in France, two wins, zero conceded, with 19-year-old Brenner the breakout star. The Principality club look built to stay.
PSG? The two-time European champions are 11th and winless — twice coming from 0-2 down just to draw. Ferran Torres rescued them once with a brace, but the alarm clock hasn't gone off. Paris FC, the "other" Paris club, are above them. And Marseille's 4-0 opening statement was followed by a grounding 0-2 in the derby at Monaco — work in progress at 8th.

The Jerseys the World Is Buying
While the tables settle, the shop floor is telling its own story. Liverpool's retro 1989/91-inspired home shirt is the season's hottest — up 99% year-on-year at JD Sports, and it's the jersey Isak wears as the new No.9. Dortmund are up 104%, Arsenal up 76% on their Emirates-homage home kit, and Real Madrid's pink is the most-talked-about shirt in football. AC Milan's return to bold red-and-black stripes is the most-loved redesign of the summer.

One Last Word: The Window That Changed Everything
Today (31 August) the window closes in Germany and France; tomorrow night in England, Spain and Italy. The summer's biggest deals — Morgan Rogers to Chelsea (£117m), Elliot Anderson to Man City (£116m), Sandro Tonali to Spurs (€108m) — have already reshaped the landscape, and Rodri's move to Barcelona gave the Ballon d'Or winner a new stage.
