Arsenal No.14 • The Mask • 97 Goals in Lisbon • Complete Shirt Guide
Sporting CP paid €24m for a Championship striker in July 2023. Two seasons later he had 97 goals in 102 games, two Primeira Liga titles, two golden boots, and a place among the most devastating goal-scoring seasons ever recorded: 43 goals in 2023-24 with the Player of the Season award, then 54 in 2024-25 - including a Champions League hat-trick against Manchester City in a 4-1 rout.

Lisbon: 97 Goals Nobody Saw Coming
Sporting CP paid €24m for a Championship striker in July 2023. Two seasons later he had 97 goals in 102 games, two Primeira Liga titles, two golden boots, and a place among the most devastating goal-scoring seasons ever recorded: 43 goals in 2023-24 with the Player of the Season award, then 54 in 2024-25 - including a Champions League hat-trick against Manchester City in a 4-1 rout. Across the 2024 calendar year, he scored 62 goals, more than anyone else in world football.
Brighton signed him for £1m and never started him in a league game. Two clubs later, he was lifting the Premier League. That is the whole transfer market in one biography.
Sweden's No.17: The Nation's Emergency Plan
For Sweden, Gyökeres is the whole attack plan in one surname. The numbers are absurd for a nation of ten million: four goals in one game against Azerbaijan — the night he overtook Erling Haaland atop the Nations League scoring charts — a hat-trick against Ukraine in a World Cup play-off semi-final, and the extra-time winner against Poland that sent Sweden to the 2026 World Cup. In the tournament itself he scored against Tunisia and assisted twice as Sweden reached the round of 32 before France ended the run. Thirty-five caps, twenty-one goals — and the World Cup cycle to come with the No.17 on his back.
The Mask
You cannot write about this striker without the mask. The black warrior-style disguise he pulls from his sock for big goals began at Coventry as a tribute to the Bane character — football's most theatrical celebration, performed with the straight face of a man who scores for a living. It has crossed borders with him: Lisbon loved it, north London has adopted it, and replica masks now appear in the Emirates stands whenever he warms up. It is, in its way, the most marketable celebration since robot dancing - and it makes the No.14 shirt the rare jersey that comes with a costume.
