Monaco are the machine. Under new coach Filipe Luís, the principality side have won 1-0 at Le Havre and 2-0 at home to Marseille — two wins, three scored, none conceded. PSG are the wobble. The two-time defending champions and reigning Ligue 1 winners have drawn both games 2-2 — and needed Vitinha (90+1') and Marquinhos (90+5') to rescue points after falling 0-2 behind in both. New signing Ferran Torres came off the bench to score twice on debut, and the summer rebuild — after selling Gonçalo Ramos to Milan for €74m and Lee Kang-in to Atlético — is still settling. Two games, no wins, 11th place: nobody panics at PSG in September, but nobody is comfortable either.
The promoted sides are thriving. Paris FC sit second, Troyes sixth, and both have taken four points from two — a stunning collective start. Lille, with 39-year-old Olivier Giroud providing two assists against PSG, are third; Lyon are fourth; and Lens — who beat PSG 1-0 in the Super Cup — round out the European-chasing pack. Marseille's 4-0 win over Strasbourg was followed by a 2-0 defeat at Monaco, the kind of inconsistency a new-look squad under Bruno Genesio is still ironing out.
The Season in Three Tiers
Title race. Monaco's perfect start and PSG's stutter have, for the first time in years, made Ligue 1 feel genuinely open at the top. PSG's squad is still comfortably the deepest — the question is how quickly it clicks — while Monaco, Lille and a rebuilt Marseille all scent opportunity. Paris FC and Troyes are fun early stories, but nobody expects a promoted side to sustain a title tilt.
European race. Lille, Lyon, Lens and Marseille make up the usual cast, with Rennes and a Paris FC side playing with the confidence of a team with nothing to lose chasing the pack. The five European places will be fiercely contested.
Relegation battle. Auxerre are bottom with a 3:8 goal record after two rounds — the leakiest start in the division — while Le Mans, Lorient, Le Havre, Toulouse and Nice all sit on one point or fewer. The promoted sides' early momentum is the one thing keeping the bottom half from fully taking shape.
The Paris Derby Nobody Saw Coming
For the first time in their history, Paris FC sit above Paris Saint-Germain in the table. The promoted club from the 20th arrondissement have taken four points from two games without conceding, and their early rise has done more than anything to sharpen the sense that this season's Ligue 1 is different. PSG's wobble — two draws, two late rescues — is the other half of the same story: the two-time champions have not looked like themselves, and the rest of the league has stopped being scared.
